Budding Actors: Theatre Camps Provide Summer Fun and Learning

The month of June is a busy one for Wayne Township Community Theatre!

Besides its two-week run of the wonderful musical “The Little Mermaid,” the WTCT has been conducting theatre camps for children in kindergarten through seventh grade.

June 12-16, children in kindergarten along with first and second graders spent their mornings in a camp called “Page to Stage.” Under the direction of Jessica Bartley, campers created their own story and then brought it to life on stage after reading underwater-themed books. The camp included daily themed crafts and activities featuring mermaids, sharks and seahorses.

For second through seventh graders, the focus of camp the week of June 19-23 has been a musical called “Journey of the Noble Gnarble.” This tale of a little sea creature with a big dream allowed campers to audition for roles, rehearse lines, gather costumes, paint sets, and perform. Wayne Township Education Foundation Artistic Director Craig Underwood directed this camp.

The third week of WTCT’s theatre camps is focused on a play called “The Not So Mysterious Disappearance of Cinderella.” This camp, also for second through seventh graders, is led by Amanda Shrum. In this comical twist on the traditional story, Cinderella goes missing and everyone in the kingdom is a suspect. The play is packed with humor and fresh takes on classic characters. As with week two of these summer theatre opportunities, campers learn to audition for roles, rehearse lines, gather costumes, paint sets, and perform.

“It’s a delight to see our theatre camps in full swing for another summer season,” said Wayne Township Executive Director Lisa Baize. “To see our children learn and grow in important ways during the week they attend camp is very special. These camps are an important way in which the Wayne Township Education Foundation supports enriching, engaging programs for our youth.”

If your student missed the opportunity to take part in this summer’s theatre camps, not to worry – Wayne Township Community Theatre, with continuing support from the Wayne Township Education Foundation, will host another camp this fall, from October 10-14. More information will be coming out soon at wtef.wayne.k12.in.us on that camp’s theme and how parents can register their students.
