Photo of student in the Area 31 EMS program learning hands-on Wilderness First Responder training experience

August 2025

Students in the Area 31 Career Center’s Emergency Medical Services program have broadened their experience, thanks to support from the Wayne Township Education Foundation.

The EMS students took their learning to the next level during a hands-on Wilderness First Responder Training experience at Jameson Camp in Indianapolis. Thanks to a generous grant from WTEF’s Tyler Humphrey Memorial Fund, students could apply their classroom knowledge in real-world, outdoor emergency scenarios.

The overnight training on the camp’s 146-acre wooded property offered students a chance to adapt their EMT skills for wilderness settings where traditional medical equipment and support may not be readily available. The experience included technical skill development and outdoor survival elements, marking a first for many participating students.

During the training, students learned how to: splint a broken leg using common hiking gear, create an improvised cervical collar from available materials, lift and move patients without a backboard, stabilize joints in unstable terrain, and apply trauma care techniques when emergency services are hours away.

Beyond helping students sharpen their medical skills, the experience also served as an introduction to outdoor living for many. Students learned how to pitch tents and set up camp, combining teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability in a new environment. The Wilderness First Responder Training is a unique addition to the Area 31 EMS curriculum, providing critical exposure to emergency care in remote locations. This experience mirrors the challenges first responders face in rural or disaster-stricken areas.

Tyler Humphrey was a business major at IUPUI who passed away in 2019. His mother said Tyler dreamed of becoming an EMT and firefighter. Besides the Wilderness First Responder Training, the memorial fund named for him has also supported the purchase of a CPR canine mannequin for the Area 31 EMT Program.
