Teachers committed to igniting their students’ sense of wonder know they sometimes need to go beyond the textbook.

Ben Davis High School science teacher Andrea Rigdon knew this would be the case as she planned a zoology course for her students. With the help of the Wayne Township Education Foundation and DonorsChoose, she has collected an assortment of classroom materials that, as she puts it, help “unleash the animal kingdom.”

“My zoology students are on an exciting journey into the diverse and fascinating world of animals,” Mrs. Rigdon said. “Grant funding has provided us with essential supplies to spark curiosity, encourage collaborative learning, and make our introductory units unforgettable.”

Dry erase markers and paper help students brainstorm on subjects such as animal classification. Petri dishes and plastic spoons allow them to explore live specimens such as small flatworms.

Students are also using mini address labels and permanent markers to organize specimens and label diagrams. “These small but mighty tools will help us keep our scientific investigations organized and professional,” Mrs. Rigdon said.

And for an extra bit of adventure, Mrs. Rigdon has included stuffed animals in her collection of materials for the class.

“Stuffed animals aren’t just for cuddles!” Mrs. Rigdon said. “They are our models for external anatomy labs, helping students identify body parts and understand symmetry in a tangible, fun way.”

With the help of these supplies, Ben Davis’ zoology students aren’t just learning about zoology - they’re doing zoology.

“These materials help ensure every student has the opportunity to engage in meaningful, hands-on learning experiences,” said Mrs. Rigdon. “By providing these basic yet vital tools, we’re igniting a lifelong passion for scientific discovery and an appreciation for the incredible diversity of life on Earth.”
