“We Are Wayne” has been our school district and community’s motto for more than a decade. Nowhere is that more clear than in the way our school system’s employees support each other in their effort to serve our children.

Garden City Elementary Computer Science Teacher Sara Ward, for example, has been giving regularly to the Wayne Township Education Foundation for decades.

“I began donating to the Wayne Township Education Foundation in 1996,” Mrs. Ward said. “The Wayne Township Education Foundation was providing grants to teachers in the township, and I saw this as a way of giving to my colleagues. I was also a recipient of one of those grants many years ago.”

Mrs. Ward, one of the longest-running donors to WTEF, has been making her contributions through employee payroll deduction. In that, she has lots of company. More than 700 employees in the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township donate an average of $6 per month to WTEF.

“Our employee donors are an essential piece of sharing our story” said WTEF Executive Director Lisa Baize. “When community members learn that employees go above and beyond to give back to support one another and create new experiences for their students, it inspires others to donate generously and give public education a lift.”

Continuing contributions like Mrs. Ward’s support teachers such as Westlake Elementary’s Kriquet Johnson (pictured), who has used WTEF funding to help provide science books for her students.

“These materials are priceless,” said Mrs. Johnson. “It is comforting to know that our community supports us. Without this support, there would be many classrooms that would not have the ability to supply these types of high quality supplemental learning materials for our students.”

WTEF is offering a new way for its supporters to enhance the giving of MSD Wayne staff. Donors who match a staff gift with a donation of $6 per month or more, or make a one-time gift of $75, will receive a “Celebrate Wayne” t-shirt.”One hundred percent of these gifts will support classrooms,” Mrs. Baize said.
