Zachary Smith and Amanda Masterson love the theatre - and they’re hoping their enthusiasm for the stage catches fire with their fellow teachers at Ben Davis High School.

Mr. Smith and Mrs. Masterson have planned a Ben Davis faculty performance of “Elf Jr., The Musical” for the fall of 2025. They have high hopes for the production, and for what it could mean for Ben Davis faculty and students.

“The program's purpose is to build stronger connections within the school, create a shared experience between staff and students, and eventually raise funds to support a scholarship for students interested in pursuing a career in the performing arts,” said Mr. Smith. “This annual tradition will strengthen internal school culture and provide an opportunity for students to witness the dedication and teamwork required to put on a successful performance.”

Mr. Smith and Mrs. Masterson turned to the Wayne Township Education Foundation for funding for their project. WTEF support will help pay for items such as licensing, scripts, music, costumes, and props.

The musical’s main roles have been assigned; in the months ahead, minor roles will be filled and rehearsals will begin. The production is planned for November. Mr. Smith says many good things could come from this faculty theatrical effort.

“We would like for the work that goes into this musical to build stronger connections and foster unity among the staff members at Ben Davis High School,” he said. “And we hope to create an annual tradition of collaboration and performance that will promote community engagement.”
