Image with WTEF logo celebrating 35 years

This year, the Wayne Township Education Foundation proudly celebrates 35 years of investing in students, teachers, and schools across our community.

Inspired by the success of education foundations across Indiana, Wayne Township resident Bart York envisioned creating a foundation dedicated to enriching educational opportunities in our schools. That vision became a reality on August 12, 1991, when the foundation officially received its Certificate of Incorporation from the Indiana Secretary of State.

Over the past three and a half decades, the foundation has grown from supporting student and teacher recognition programs to funding innovative classroom grants that expand learning beyond the traditional curriculum. Signature programs such as the Seniors' Choice Awards, the Excellence in Academic Achievement and Teaching Banquet (Top 30 Banquet), and the Evening of Excellence continue to recognize outstanding achievements throughout the district.

A major milestone came in the late 1990s, when matching grants from Lilly Endowment and The Indianapolis Foundation helped establish the Foundation's endowment. What began as a bold fundraising campaign has grown into an endowment of more than $2.5 million, providing sustainable annual support for grants and recognition programs.

“I suppose I had a dream of the foundation growing and really being a supportive constant for the township, but I think I can say it has surpassed my original expectations,” said Mr. York.

Since 1991, the Wayne Township Education Foundation has awarded more than $3.5 million to programs that have benefited more than 600,000 students, educators, and families. As the foundation celebrates its 35th anniversary, it remains committed to creating opportunities that inspire learning, while being responsive to new needs such as "I Want to Be a Teacher" scholarships that create a legacy for teaching and learning into the future. Ultimately, WTEF is committed to strengthening Wayne Township schools for generations to come,
