Coffee Cart Helps Students Thrive

There’s something new at Chapel Hill 7th & 8th Grade Center that has staff looking forward in a new way to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings.

“The students get so excited every day we do it,” said Chapel Hill occupational therapist Abby McGill, “and the teachers love it as well.”

The new project at Chapel Hill is called the Super Brew Coffee Cart, funded with a grant from the Wayne Township Education Foundation. The project allows students who receive special education services in the school district’s Thrive program to deliver coffee and tea to staff three days a week.

The project brings benefits to both students and staff. Staff members get to have a great cup of coffee or tea, and enjoy interacting with the students serving them. The students involved improve their motor skills, develop social and job skills, and foster relationships with general education students and teachers. “That improves social cohesion at Chapel Hill, and helps build a sense of community within the school,” said Mrs. McGill.

The WTEF grant funded equipment to make and serve the coffee and tea, aprons for the students, and the cart itself. Tip money from staff is allowing the project to continue to purchase coffee and tea, and become self-sustaining.

Mrs. McGill said the future of the Super Brew Coffee Cart is bright: “I am optimistic this project will continue to bring joy to our students and staff.”
