WTEF Secures Grant for Food Pantry

The corporate foundation sponsored by Tegna, parent company of WTHR in Indianapolis, has provided a $5,000 grant to the Wayne Township Education Foundation in support of the Giants Marketplace food pantry. The grant will expand the number of families served by the food pantry.

Nina Brahm, president of the WTEF board of directors, came across the opportunity to seek a grant from the Tegna Foundation and WTHR that would help expand this community outreach.

“The Giants Marketplace served 1,446 families from January through July of this year,” said Lisa Baize, WTEF Executive Director. “It is an expansion of the existing school-based food pantry serving families whose children are enrolled in the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township, as well as staff members in need. Each food basket provided enough food for a household for seven to 10 days.”

The grant from Tegna will allow the Giants Marketplace to expand, providing funds the district can use to buy food.

“We can purchase affordable food in bulk through our partnership with Gleaners Food Bank,” said Mrs. Baize.

“This support from one of our valued media partners in the community could not have come at a better time,” said Mrs. Baize. “If children are hungry, it’s hard for them to learn. With the help of WTHR and the foundation sponsored by its parent company Tegna, families in need throughout Wayne Township will continue to be able to put food on the table. WTEF is proud to have helped facilitate this new source of funding.”
